Hiccups in the Night: X-ray Monitoring of the Two Crab-like LMC Pulsars
نویسنده
چکیده
We are undertaking an extensive X-ray monitoring campaign of the two Crab-like pulsars in the Large Magellanic Clouds, PSR B0540-69 and PSR J0537-6910. We present our current phase-connected timing analysis derived from a set of 50 pointed X-ray observations spanning several years. From our initial 1.2 yr monitoring program of the young 50 ms pulsar PSR B0540-69, we find the first compelling evidence for a glitch in its rotation. This glitch is characterized by ∆ν/ν = (1.90 ± 0.05) × 10 and ∆ν̇/ν̇ = (8.5 ± 0.5) × 10. Taking into account the glitch event, we derive a braking index of n = 1.81 ± 0.07, significantly lower than previous reported. For the 16 ms pulsar, PSR J0537-6910, we recorded 6 large glitch events during a period of nearly 3 years, the highest rate of all known Crab-like systems. Despite the extreme timing activity, the long term spin-down of this pulsar continues to average −1.9743× 10 Hz/s.

A New View on Young Pulsars in Supernova Remnants : Slow , Radio - quiet & X - ray Bright
We propose a simple explanation for the apparent dearth of radio pulsars associated with young supernova remnants (SNRs). Recent X-ray observations of young remnants have revealed slowly rotating (P ∼ 10s) central pulsars with pulsed emission above 2 keV, lacking in detectable radio emission. Some of these objects apparently have enormous magnetic fields, evolving in a manner distinct from the ...
متن کاملFurther Evidence for Collimated Particle Beams from Pulsars, and Precession
We follow up on our (Radhakrishnan & Deshpande, 2001: RD01) radically different interpretation of the observed structures and morphologies in the x-ray observations of the nebulae around young pulsars (PWNe). In our general model for PWNe (RD01), originally motivated by the Chandra observations of the Vela X-ray nebula, the bright arcs, the jet-like feature and the diffuse components in such ne...
متن کاملBeppoSAX observations of rotation-powered pulsars
During its life, BeppoSAX observed several isolated pulsars, giving important contributions to the knowledge of the phenomenology and properties of the X-ray emission from this class of sources. In this paper I review the spectral and timing results obtained from BeppoSAX observations. In particular, results on three Crab-like (Crab, PSR B1509-58 and PSR B0540-69) and 3 millisecond pulsars (PSR...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملDiscovery of an Ultra-fast X-ray Pulsar in the Supernova Remnant N157B
We present the serendipitous discovery of 16 ms pulsed X-ray emission from the Crab-like supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is the fastest spinning pulsar associated with a supernova remnant (SNR). Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), centered on the field containing SN1987A, reveal an X-ray pulsar with a narrow pulse profile. Archival ASCA X-ray da...
